Management and Entrepreneurship

The discipline of Management and Entrepreneurship offers dynamic and innovative modules and programmes that are carefully designed and focused on developing the students’ skills, knowledge, and abilities to optimally function as managers and entrepreneurs in a range of real organisational activities. The aim of the discipline is to develop leaders of the future, by offering modules and programmes that are guaranteed to add value to the students’ academic growth. All our modules and programmes offer rigorous academic standards comparable with similar programmes at other universities. Our undergraduate modules equip students with the fundamental tools on how to make sense of the world around them, understand the behaviour of managers, consumers and entrepreneurs, and equip them with the language of management, organisations, and entrepreneurship. Postgraduate programmes are designed for specialisation and strengthening the professional business, entrepreneurial and research capacity of our students.

Why Study Public Governance?

The Public Governance Discipline offers students an opportunity to gain insight into the theory and practice of public governance – affairs, administration, policy and development management. This is both urban and rural settings, being considerate on today’s and the future’s public administration and governance, institutions and intricacies. This relating to the need for sustainable development, administration and governance, the advancements in technology, digitalisation, and other innovations central to the public service and delivery.

Alumni

This is evident in how the Discipline continues to attract and graduate notable and prominent alumni such as political figures in the country, from Minsters of Departments, Premiers of Provinces, Mayors of towns and cities, as well as senior government public servants with some having held or holding currently positions in government departments or agencies such as directors, deputy directors generals and director generals. These alumni excel in public service within government and across sectors, addressing significant issues in public administration – management and policy emphasising African pillared public service values.

Anchored on the principles of Public Service and Administration, also emphasizing ubuntu, Just administrative action,  equality, impartiality, fairness, and accountability. These values also highlight the importance of professionalism, ethics, and the responsible use of resources.

Academic Excellence and Research Leadership

Academics in the discipline have had ground-breaking research within the space of Management and Entrepreneurship. This research has had significant impact on the way businesses, both small and large, operate. Also, this research has contributed immensely to the body of knowledge within the Management and Entrepreneurship spaces.

The discipline is working closely with the KZN Department of Economic Development with regard to empowering Small and Medium Enterprises with management skills and sustainable business practices
