The Master of Commerce (MCom) in Economics develops advanced economic knowledge, analytical skills and research competence to address complex economic challenges. The programme provides expertise in economic theory, econometrics, quantitative analysis and data analytics, while engaging with contemporary issues such as economic growth, development, inequality, employment, financial markets, trade and sustainability. Students develop the ability to critically evaluate economic evidence, conduct independent research, apply appropriate analytical methods and formulate evidence-based solutions to economic and policy problems. Graduates are equipped for careers in government, financial institutions, research organisations, consulting, business and academia, where they can apply rigorous economic analysis to support informed decision-making.
An appropriate Bachelor Honours degree or Postgraduate Diploma at NQF Level 8 in Economics, Econometrics, Finance or a cognate discipline, with a minimum overall average of 55%. At admission, candidates may be required to select a research topic within the school’s broad areas of research expertise and relevant to the qualification. International qualifications must be recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as equivalent to the required South African qualification.
