The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting is an advanced research programme designed to develop independent scholars capable of generating original knowledge and addressing complex financial and economic challenges. The programme develops advanced competencies in financial theory, quantitative and econometric methods, financial data analytics, research design and financial modelling. Candidates critically engage with contemporary issues including financial markets, risk, corporate finance, investment, fintech, artificial intelligence, digital finance, sustainability and financial regulation. Through rigorous independent research, candidates develop the ability to formulate significant research questions, generate credible evidence, critically evaluate existing knowledge and communicate findings effectively. Graduates are prepared for careers in academia, research institutions, financial institutions, government, regulatory bodies, consulting and policy organisations, contributing to financial scholarship, policy and practice.
An appropriate Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 in Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, or a cognate discipline, with a minimum overall average of 60%. Applicants must demonstrate adequate preparation in accounting, research methodology and academic research, preferably through a Master’s research component or equivalent research experience. Applicants must submit a preliminary research proposal demonstrating research potential and the capacity to undertake doctoral-level research. International qualifications must be recognised by SAQA as equivalent to the required South African qualification.
