Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Management is an advanced research programme designed to develop independent scholars capable of generating original knowledge and addressing complex organisational, managerial and societal challenges. The programme develops advanced competencies in research design, critical and strategic thinking, data analytics, theory development, evidence-based decision-making and scholarly communication. Candidates undertake rigorous, independent, and innovative research within specialised fields, including Public Governance, Management and Entrepreneurship, Supply Chain Management, and Human Resource Management and Leadership Studies.  Research may address contemporary challenges such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, sustainability, governance, organisational innovation, workforce transformation, and supply chain resilience. Graduates are equipped to contribute to management scholarship, policy and practice, and to pursue careers in academia, research institutions, government, business, consulting, and other knowledge-intensive organisations.

Entry Requirements

Management (Public governance PhD)

An appropriate Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 in Public Governance, Public Administration, Public Management, Public Policy, Development Studies, Political Science, Governance or a cognate discipline. Candidates must have achieved an overall average of at least 60% in a previous relevant qualification. Applicants must have achieved at least 65% in the research project of the previous qualification. All applicants must submit a research concept outlining their proposed area of study. International qualifications must be recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as equivalent to the required South African qualification.

Management and entrepreneurshp PhD

An appropriate Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 in Management, Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Strategic Management, Business Administration or a cognate discipline. Candidates must have achieved an overall average of at least 60% in a previous relevant qualification. Applicants must have achieved at least 65% in the research project of the previous qualification. All applicants must submit a research concept outlining their proposed area of study. International qualifications must be recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as equivalent to the required South African qualification

Management (Supply Chain PhD)  

An appropriate Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Procurement, Operations Management, or a cognate discipline. Candidates must have achieved an overall average of at least 60% in a previous relevant qualification. Applicants must have achieved at least 65% in the research project of the previous qualification.All applicants must submit a research concept outlining their proposed area of study. International qualifications must be recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as equivalent to the required South African qualification.

Management (Human resources PhD)

An appropriate Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 in Human Resource Management, Human Resource Development, Industrial Psychology, Organisational Psychology, Management, Business Management, Employment Relations, Labour Relations or a cognate discipline. Candidates must have achieved an overall average of at least 60% in a previous relevant qualification. Applicants must have achieved at least 65% in the research project of the previous qualification. All applicants must submit a research concept outlining their proposed area of study. International qualifications must be recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as equivalent to the required South African qualification

Management (Leadership studies PhD)

An appropriate Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 in Leadership, Management, Business Management, Human Resource Management, Public Management, Organisational Psychology, Education, Governance or a cognate discipline. Candidates must have achieved an overall average of at least 60% in a previous relevant qualification. Applicants must have achieved at least 65% in the research project of the previous qualification. All applicants must submit a research concept outlining their proposed area of study. International qualifications must be recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as equivalent to the required South African qualification.
