The Master of Commerce in Economics develops advanced economic knowledge, analytical skills and research competence to address complex economic challenges. The programme provides expertise in economic theory, econometrics, quantitative analysis and data analytics, while engaging with contemporary issues such as economic growth, development, inequality, employment, financial markets, trade and sustainability. Students develop the ability to critically evaluate economic evidence, conduct independent research, apply appropriate analytical methods and formulate evidence-based solutions to economic and policy problems. Graduates are equipped for careers in government, financial institutions, research organisations, consulting, business and academia, where they can apply rigorous economic analysis to support informed decision-making.
An appropriate Bachelor Honours degree or postgraduate diploma at NQF Level 8 in Economics, Econometrics, or a cognate discipline. Candidates must have achieved an overall average of at least 60% in a previous relevant qualification. Applicants who have completed a postgraduate qualification that includes a research project must have achieved at least 65% in the research project. Applicants who have completed a postgraduate diploma without a research project must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% in the qualification. All applicants must submit a research concept outlining their proposed area of study and provide evidence of prior learning in econometrics, applied statistics, or a related field. International qualifications must be recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as equivalent to the required South African qualification.
